MP3

I may now be the only person in Manchester with a dock but no iPod.

Headphones are not for me. I only used them to get test match commentary on my Walkperson radio at Old Trafford circa 1984.

But a few weeks ago my CD player gave up the fight for life and now I have this.

It has DAB, iPod dock, CD player and wonderful sound too.

I must buy an iPod very soon
.

So I need advice.

Entering the awe inspiring Apple shop in Manchester Arndale and amusing some cool young dude with my ignorance does not appeal.
Terms like sync, AAC format3 built-in accelerometer (did George W say that?), iPhone and Genius feature are not yet in my vocabulary.

Do I need 3000 songs, 16 hours of video and 120Gb?

Should I choose classic, nano or shuffle?

How do I get tunes and can I show photos from my camera?

Thanks

KAZ

I have no idea. I have an MP3 (not an i-pod) which was useful when my sports car didn't have a CD player, as I could use it to play things through the radio. I haven't used the thing for 12 months.

I know nothing about this sort of thing but I have started your bag so you will have something to carry it in when you decide.

I've only managed about 8" square so far but you'd be surprised how many plastic bags that took!

I have a very old Classic iPod which is 40Gig and about half full with about 4500 songs. A bit chunky and heavy but it still works fine (though the battery life isn't very long these days).

Both daughters have Nanos of different versions. They're much niftier and solid state so you can run without them going all jittery (which my classic one does even if I walk fast). The largest capacity Nano is 16Gig so probably stores about 4,000 songs and can also store passport sized photos....not sure I get the use of that. Youngest daughter also has a Shuffle...very small but not much capacity and no real control over what's going to play next.

I have last year's Apple Ipod Nano 4GB. Silver. I was worried I'd be clueless about using it and downloading tunes, but it's really easy and now I don't know how I managed without it. It's got a screen and games and stuff. I've been downloading for a year now and I still have space for much more.

thank goodness you've written about this KAZ. . .

I was given a nano iThingy for xmas and am totally clueless - when I plugged it into my computer, it took it upon itself to offer me a software wizardy-type thing in the sidebar of iTunes which totally threw me

and what's a shuffle?

I thought that was something to do with canasta

HELP!!

(if anyone of your technologically sound commenters knows if/how I can load Tetris onto it, I'll be eternally grateful)(as long as they explain how!)

Now that might be useful as I only have a casette player in the old 'onda.

Ziggi:
You can stop now. 8" square should be fine for the iPod.
Do you do belt loops?

NiC:
I'd like to look at bigger photos.
Shuffle's no good - I'm a control freak!

Scarlet:
Excellent news.
Would silver go with my dock?

View:
A shuffle is a teeny weeny iPod that just plays what it likes.
I think.
We will compare progress.

I bought a cunning devide - a cassette with a cable attached - plug cassette into slot, and cable into MP3 and you can play through the car system.

I prefer Cds. I only use our Mac for producing compilation CDs. I hate that random play bollocks on mp3 players. Who wants to hear Armand Van Helden sandwiched between the Beatles and Queens Of The Stone Age? Bloody stupid idea.

I hate headphones too - last year my son bought me a docking station thingy with mp3 player and speakers but it just eats up batteries so I can't really be doing with it.

I have a beautiful electric-blue 4Gb Nano..it only has 1 song on it. Because it is whisper thin I am absolutely positive that I will lose it if I ever carried out of the house.

The Music Library on my Puter has over 5000 songs of which I regularly listen to about 150ish during any given month.

I eventually realised that I burned the same 22 songs to CDs in different order for about two years...unless I do THEMES.

So basically I just want to hear my latest THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER songs until I'm sick of them.

Just sayin' is all...

no. . .

I mean yes. . .

but I think I'm thinking of the shuffle feature (as dismissed by Geoff) but what I really want to do is learn how to build playlists

or delete songs I don't actually want

may I have a quick word with Dave please? (while I'm here and on topic) Dave - how does one get something that one only has on tape onto one's MP3 jobby?

KAZ can you run an on-line helpdesk for my quest for knowledge please!

oh! I think you are already. . .

Now you've made me determined to hear "Armand Van Helden sandwiched between the Beatles and Queens Of The Stone Age".

Kev and I never agree on 'compilations'. I hate his and he hates mine.

Gerald:
I'm surprised as you are obviously very techy.
(that looks like tetchy but it isn't). tekkie?

Ah - Themes is a good idea.
You mean like love or stamp collecting or ????
Perhaps you mean Blues, Country, Jazz.
Anyway I'm sure it's a good idea.

Those sound like basic tasks - let's hope Dave comes back.
Tape to MP3 sounds like a big leap to me.

Will you tell me whether they will start to hurt my feet after 2 days when it's too late to take them back?
Probably not - but I'll be happy to have you along anyway.

Google may know - otherwise stick with the 45s and the Dansette.

The Nano has got to be first choice Kaz. You don't need the huge capacity of a Big Nana and it will last forever. I bet you get hooked on podcasts - start with the Guardian ones, the Word Podcast and the BBC Science ones. Those long bored waits at Manchester Airport will seem like a nano second.

5:59 pm
Blogger Dave said...

ILTV: you need a specialist device that will allow you to transfer tape to computer, and thence to i-pod. I have one for LPs, but not tapes.

Wish I could help, Kaz, but I merely make do with a bog standard mp3 player that plays mp3s and does little else. I guess the more gb's then the more tunes you will be able to carry around with you and iPod's are a lovely bit of design ware. I guess the more expensive then in theory the better the player but that doesn't always follow suit. For the best advice ask a hoody - if you can get passed the street speak and the knife.

I would suggest you DON'T worry about pictures on your iPod. It's like having music on your mobile. WRONG.

With that in mind, I would suggest an iPod Nano would do you, or if you like a huge amountof space, an iPod Classic. Price and storage is the difference. You can pretty much ignore everything else except...

...make sure your dock handles the one you choose.

Steve:
Ask a hoody?
Yes - I always used to consult my students about this sort of thing.
I miss them - but not the hard work involved.

Pete:
iPhone looks very complicated and seems quite large whereas the shuffle is very small and cute.
But can you choose the tracks with a shuffle and will it fit the dock?
I think not.

SL:
Thanks.
Looks like the Nano it will be - but I'll check the dock first.

I thought I'd combine your MP3/4/Nano bag with a suitcase so you can take it to Spain, so I am continuing! ILTV is providing green bags (M&S?) (or maybe Harrods??) (do they do plastic bags?) so it will be just lovely (and perhaps posh.)

Does a bag need belt loops?

A nano should do the trick, but get the more expensive version with bigger capacity. And it's always a good idea to buy straight from Apple, or an Apple store - iPods aren't always 100 per cent reliable and we've found Apple are very good about supplying a replacement straight away, no questions asked.

I have an 8Gb Nano and I absolutely love that thing! Had the original Shuffle when it came out but didn't like that I couldn't choose what order the songs played in.

Mine is silver and looks stunning in the black dock of my surround sound system.

Making playlists is very easy using iTunes. Then you just select what playlist you want to hear and there you go!

I also have a transmitter that I plug onto the end of it so I can listen to it in my truck, as I don't have an auxilliary jack in the vehicle. You tune the radio to an empty fm frequency and voila! The tunes from your iPod fill the air!

I wear it all the time while walking my dog. And when riding my horse as well. Very portable. D

Donn, I have never lost the thing yet, so be brave and take yours on an excursion. It is feeling cooped up.

I have an 8 gb silver nano . Oh how I love it . You can load any of your old CD's and store them in your ipod library for download to your ipod , you can arrange in playlists or just hit shuffle to play anything that comes into its little silver head , I think it will shufle automatically if you shake it .

Well, technically my truck is an SUV - Chevy Blazer, but truck is easier and cooler to say... cuz it sure ain't a car!

I used to drive a Dodge 1500 Hemi quad cab truck - now that was way cool! I loved that thing... tons of power (it just purred) and so much more comfy than a car. You can see above the traffic too. But what a pig on gas! :-( Ah well... the ex gets to feed it now.

Perhaps it will pay for the flight as well.
