Addiction

Do you need a crutch (no not a crotch) to get you through the day? Apart from the Sauvignon and espressos I have another strange addiction.

It started years ago when we were going through a bad patch at work - everyone in the department was hooked. Students, marking and lesson preparation were all shamefully neglected.

I do it first thing in the morning, several times during the day and usually last thing at night. But last week it was cruelly taken away and I had to go cold turkey.

Why?

The kind insurance people sent me a new computer to replace my lap top which had met with an accident - the usual thing but it was water not coffee and clumsiness not LOLing.

It’s a beautiful VAIO with everything a girl could want including Windows Vista Professional ………………………………................ BUT NO FREECELL !!

They don’t do a download from Microsoft, the online versions were excruciatingly slow and had terrible graphics and
I couldn’t buy it in the Arndale.

I love Zoo Keeper (thanks Lubin) but it’s just not as comforting.

After hours searching the web I found a letter from a nerd which said :-

'Here is how you do it.

Get onto a computer running windows XP.

Search and copy these five files onto a disk or thumb drive:

CARDS.DLL

FREECELL.CHM

FREECELL.chw

FREECELL.EXE
FREECELL.HLP

On a computer running XP, these can be found in the following folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
FREECELL.EXE and CARDS.DLL

C:\WINDOWS\Help

FREECELL.CHM and FREECELL.chw and FREECELL.HLP

Copy these five files into the machine running Vista.

e.g.
C:\Program Files\FreecellXP
Make a shortcut to C:\Program Files\FreecellXP\FREECELL.EXE'

So - I borrowed Kev’s XP laptop and I did it.

Aren't I clever?

Have you got a crutch that gets you through the day?

You are such a saddo Kaz. "Same" is quite addictive. There's a Javascriptversion here.
Tell us about the Vaio accident (or did I miss a post?)

until I saw your screenshot of the solitaire I had absolutely no idea what you meant by freecell...I am a luddite!

Yes, well done on getting Freecell onto Vista against Bill Gate's wishes! Ha, take that global capitalism.

Despite "knowing" that coffee only works because of the previous day's coffee intake (ie: if I hadn't drunk one yesterday I wouldn't need one today), I do still require at least one cup of decent coffee most days to get me going. It tastes absolutely wonderful and as I type I can it doing its dirty deed (or waking me up as it's also known).

What's wrong with needing a crutch anyway? When I had a broken leg I needed two!

As for Freecell, I don't even know how to play it! Don't tell me, I'd end up with yet another crutch.

This post is just an excuse to show off your shiny new Vaio.

As far as I'm concerned retired people should be down the community centre supping soup, nut buggering about playing Freecell.

Shouldn't you be playing bingo?

oh! I'd forgotten. . .

I used to play that at lunchtimes in the office, when on telephone duty

everyone did, come to think about it

and then we'd leave our computer screen blatantly displaying the cards pinging around all over the place and the fireworks going if any of us had managed to get to the end

happy days

Thanks Rog:
You say the sweetest things.
It wasn’t a big accident - the water seeped on to some paper which then seeped under the computer. A day later the keys on the left hand side wouldn’t work.
I had quite a fight to get a proper replacement.
As I said to them - you wouldn’t offer me a Skoda to replace a BMW.

Mopsa:
Apparently Freecell is one of the Solitaire games.
I like to play for speed rather than to win.

NiC:
Yeah - watch out Microsoft - remember Woolworths.
I wonder whether I’d swap espresso for Freecell if it came to the choice.
Don’t even think of starting! You’d only blame me if you got addicted.

Garfer:
I’ll do all the nut buggering I want to - thankyouverymuch!
Oh btw - where’s that community centre?

12:03 pm
Blogger KAZ said...

Dave:
No
I’ll get you back for that.

Scarlet:
I’ve had to up on shoes.
I just admired them in the cupboard and kept on wearing the same old pair.
Now clothes - that’s another story.

Jane:
(in menacing tone)
Just watch it!

View:
“I used to play that at lunchtimes in the office”
So that explains the global recession.

View:
G’won - you know you want to!

Geoff:
‘Game boy Golf’.
Now that really makes me titter!

I am addicted to reading my daily horoscope.
It all started as a bit of a joke to wind the auditors up . We have a list of morning checks we have to do on the systems that has to be signed each morning and audit toddle along every so often and check you are doing everything on the list .
I added a check of a couple of horoscope websites as a laugh , claiming our support personel HAD to know of any adverse planetary influences for that day......only now I have become addicted , and even check them at the weekend :-(

I do play freecell sometimes but I'm more addicted to spider solitaire (the two pack version which I can get out 57% of the time)

The thing about freecell is if you get to the point where you are definitely going to lose - but don't actually make the fatal last move - you can preserve your score by rebooting the computer - which is what I'm going to now after shutting down all my open apps.

I had no idea what freecell was, either. aye thank yha.

My crutch is tea and biscuits.

I'm addicted to reading blogs. I can't think of anything else at the moment. I used to be addicted to coca cola but a year and a half after quitting cold turkey I don't think about it or crave it anymore. The only thing, when I pick soda I make sure not to get a coke.

My ex husband's ex girlfriend makes a living out of doing those extended horoscopes.
I could introduce you.

Gerald:
Thanks for the tip about scores.
I play quickly and make a lot of mistakes - so that will improve my percentage.

Arabella:
It's very therapeutic.
Hobnobs??

MJ:
and cake ....ooh and shoes (see Scarlet).

MJ 2:
I'll send you my condenser (I stole it from the lab).
Then you can distil your own.

Pete:
Well done on quitting the coke (?)
The word soda is funny - in UK we usually mean soda water as in 'Whisky and soda'.
Horrid on its own.

Tony:
SNAP???
Freecell is a game of skill and dexterity not to mention intellect, nerve and cunning.

Garfer:
I only get the option to open 'Games Explorer'.
There's a sort of page for keeping score and nowt else!
I know that Vista should have freecell - is it because it's Vista professionaland professionals don't play games? :)

Donn:
Use a syringe - it was Bing Crosby's daughter.
The James Blunt one is inexplicable - I blame Linda Perry who is otherwise rather cool.

Steve:
I would probably spend far more dosh on line if there was any way we could get delivery to our flats.
It's OK if you are actually in - but otherwise no good - Amazon gave up and cancelled my order

Pete:
Soda water is not just fizzy water - it tastes like Alka Seltzer i.e. medicine.
I think it contains sodium bicarbonate.
Tonic is wonderful especially in gin with a colurful umbrella.

I will have to try Soda Water sometime. Just to see how it tastes.

Tonic works very well with gin indeed.

Before we had the net at work, I was addicted to Freecell, Solitaire, and Spider... but the worst was Hearts, which we used to play against each other in the office till it became a tournament and management had to take it away because we weren't getting any work done.

"Quick game," someone would say - and that'd be it for the afternoon.
