I possibly spend more time reading the Radio Times than watching the television. I just like to know what I'm missing.

Alison Graham is one contributor who makes sense - I agree that we can well manage without another series of Heartbeat - I thought it ended years ago.

However she then goes on to compare it with Battenburg - too sweet and soon forgotten.

You can go off people.

So - In the absence of my energy - have fun choosing your favourite cake. Add one of your choice if you wish

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Victoria sponge

Carrot cake

Bakewell Tart
(This is the real thing)

Custard Tart
Custard (vanilla) slice

Chocolate cake
Tunnocks Tea cake
KAZ

Yay KAZ! A cake fest for a Friday afternoon. I gather it stopped raining a couple of times last week... it would turn anyone to sweet confections.

I'm torn between the Carrot Cake (which doesn't taste of Carrot) and the Battenburg (which doesn't tast of Mountains).

PS Is Scarlet being rude?

Can Bannofee Pie be classed as cake? because I could swim in that and eat as I swim. If it doesn't count, then a French Fancy would be my second choice. Anything Mr. Kipling gets up to is fine by me.

Bakewell Tart for me. And if she's not available I'll have to make do with a fig roll.

is that technically a cake? sounds delicious.
mmmmmmmmmmmarzipan
we agree on most things but not cake.
love rock cakes with lashings of butter.

I'm sorry but just because cake in the name doesn't let Tunnocks Tea cakes through.

There exists a Stollen variation with a small amount of marzipan, but I have no idea whether it is close to the original. They put all kinds of citronat and such things in.

Kaz, I used to read the Radio Times from cover to cover every week but sadly hardly ever remember to buy it now as there is so little on TV of interest to me any more. In addition I used to love reading the cast lists for the programmes I enjoyed which got smaller and smaller as they squashed all the columns together. Glad to hear you're still keeping the RT going though - it would be a shame to see it disappear. Hope you're keeping up the strength to make short work of those Battenburgs! Lxx

Blogger Gerald (Ackworth born) said...

Battenburg is lovely (got a thing for marzipan) or a piece of black forest so long as it doesn't have nuts in - the wife has a thing now for egg custards (from Greggs)- I get RT on subscription but don't read it as much as I did so I've cancelled the standing order - when the sub runs out will get TV extra (only 49p)

Marie A.of France once dismissed the mob of starving peasants and said "Let them eat cake". Little did she know that her head would roll for such insensitivity.

An Englysche fellow by the name of John Heywood wrote, "wolde you bothe eate your cake, and have your cake?"

Heywood's idiomatic proverb is another wonderful example of our natural predeliction to existing in a constant state of cognitive dissonance...that uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously.

Since cake seems to be so much trouble I decided to be a "Pie" guy. I've always expected to have an inexhaustable supply of pie, and eat it too. I don't think that's too much to ask for, do you?
